6 Unexpected Things That Made My Trip to Tenerife Unforgettable

Tenerife isn’t just sunshine and beaches—it’s one of those places where small moments sneak up on you.

Just a four-hour hop from London, this Canary Island surprised me in the best ways. I came for the sea, but stayed for the silence, the stars, and the spontaneous detours.

Here are six little things that made the biggest impact—none of them planned, all of them worth it.

1.Woke up in the south, ended up on a volcano

My day started in Costa Adeje with a slow breakfast by the pool. By noon, I was walking across red, cracked earth in Teide National Park, surrounded by volcanic silence.

I didn’t pack heavy—a simple travel waterproof backpack carried everything I needed for the switch from beach mode to hiking gear.


2.Watched Saturn rise above the lava fields

Teide is known for some of the clearest night skies in the world. I joined a last-minute stargazing group, not expecting much—but the stillness, the stars, and the sudden hush of a mountain night made it unforgettable.


3.Got splashed by a whale

I had no idea Tenerife was such a good place for whale watching. We didn’t just see dolphins—we got up close with a family of pilot whales, and yes, they got us wet. A waterproof daypack saved the day.

4.Took a nap on a loud beach

Tucked away behind black rock walls, Playa Amarilla felt like a secret. I brought just a towel, some water, and my best waterproof backpack for travel.

The Hike That Changed My Mind About Tenerife (And Myself)

I used to think Tenerife was all about beaches and seafood. But then I found myself hiking across volcanic rock under a sky full of stars, gasping for breath and awe at the same time.
