7 Small Towns Near Toronto That Will Make You Want to Slow Down

Sometimes all you need is a short drive and an open mind.

Just outside of Toronto—within a 1 to 2.5 hour drive—you’ll find towns that feel like they belong in a novel. Places where time slows down, shopkeepers smile at strangers, and a good cup of coffee tastes even better after a long walk by the lake.

I took a few days to explore 7 such towns. Packed everything I needed into my extend backpack, hit the road solo, and let the journey lead me. Here’s what I found:

Historic buildings surrounded by autumn leaves on the lakeshore in Port Hope

1. Bayfield – 2.5h from Toronto

Lakeside serenity, marina sunsets, and small-town shops you’ll want to get lost in. Bayfield’s charm lies in its quiet energy—perfect for reading by the water or watching the light shift over the trees.

2. Elora – 1h20min drive

Sitting along the gorge with waterfalls and artisan shops, Elora is a blend of natural drama and creative soul. I bought handmade ceramics, watched the river flow, and wandered without checking the time.

3. Cobourg – 1h15min

Soft sand meets historic buildings here. Walk the beach barefoot, then stroll the old town’s stone facades. It’s where you’ll want to stay all summer long.

4. Port Hope – 1h15min

Fall is this town’s season—red leaves, quiet theatres, and a historic main street that looks like a film set. Come for a slow afternoon and stay for the mood.

5. Orangeville – just 1h

Country village feel, conservation areas nearby, and streets that glow in golden hour. Grab a sandwich, walk the trails, and breathe differently for a while.

6. Blue Mountain Village – 2h

Summer biking or winter skiing, this mountain village has it all. I came for the fresh air and left feeling like I’d been on vacation. Don’t forget a layer or two in your extend backpack—temps shift quickly here.

7. Stratford – 1.5h

A paradise for Shakespeare lovers—and anyone who likes cafés, bookstores, and riverside strolls. The Avon River is beautiful at any hour, especially with a coffee in hand and no agenda.

All of these towns reminded me: slow isn’t boring—it’s intentional.

So the next time the city feels too fast, take your extend backpack, pick a direction, and go.
