An Artistic Escape by the Sea: Discovering Margate's Coastal Charm

Just 1.5 hours from London, Margate offers vintage shops, seaside art, and sun-drenched serenity. Pack light and soak it all in.

Margate might just be the most artistic town you've never heard of.

When the city feels loud and heavy, this little coastal gem quietly offers everything you didn’t know you needed. Located just 1.5 hours from London by train, Margate blends seaside charm with creative spirit—a place where the ocean meets indie culture.

Wandering through Old Town, you'll find vintage stores tucked between record shops and coffee bars, each one radiating character. Grab a scoop of ice cream, stroll past sea-blasted walls painted in pastel tones, and you’ll know you’re somewhere special.

One of the town’s highlights is the Turner Contemporary gallery, standing bright and modern at the water’s edge. It was hosting a Milhazes exhibition when I visited—vibrant, playful, and totally unexpected in a sleepy town like this.

But it’s not all curated spaces and perfect coffee. Margate knows how to be still. Whether you're sitting along the shoreline or watching kids chase dogs across the sand, this town makes you exhale. It's a place to notice shadows, textures, and salty breeze on your skin.
I carried just a lightweight waterproof backpack, enough for a change of clothes, my sketch pad, and a snack. It was exactly the kind of freedom I hoped for: no drag, no fuss, just flow.

Margate might not be on every travel list yet, but it deserves a spot on yours. When you need beauty without pressure, art without pretense, and sea air to clear your mind—this is where you go.
