Escaping the Rain: A Half-Day Trip to Chilliwack’s District 1881

It had been raining for what felt like a week straight in Vancouver.

The kind of wet, grey weather that seeps into your energy a little. I didn’t have time for a big trip, but I needed a change of scenery. So I packed a light layer into my extend backpack, grabbed a coffee, and drove out to Chilliwack’s District 1881.

📍 Just an hour from the city, this little historic-style street was full of surprises. Brick facades, boutique shops, mural art, and cafés tucked behind window displays. It wasn’t large, but it had character—especially on a quiet rainy afternoon.

Even the drizzle added to the mood. Street lights reflected off the cobblestones, and a soft playlist drifted from behind café windows. I wandered slowly, stopped to admire storefronts, and felt like I was walking through a movie set.

🥚 We eventually ducked into The Offy, a cozy spot tucked down a side alley. The eggs benny was decent, the burger even better—but it was the vibe that won me over. Clean design, warm lighting, a window seat with framed prints. Everything felt… thoughtful.

We spent the next hour walking without a plan. I’m not much of a photographer, but even I found corners that made me pause. I can imagine it gets even better in December with full holiday decorations.

As we drove back before dark, clouds drifted across the hills around Chilliwack. It wasn’t a big adventure—but it shifted my day, and honestly, my week.
