This Icelandic Horse Had a Mind of His Own — And I Followed

I didn’t go to Iceland expecting to be chosen by a horse. But that’s exactly what happened on a crisp morning at Laxnes Horse Farm.

I booked a combo tour — horseback riding followed by the Golden Circle — through the GetYourGuide app. No need to rent a car or plan logistics. Just an early morning pickup, a flexible itinerary, and one expandable backpack to carry it all.
Laxnes was serene. Every horse had a name, a bio, and a bit of personality. Mine? Nugget. Small, confident, and surprisingly strategic when it came to stealing snacks. 🐴 We followed a scenic trail through grassy hills and shallow rivers. No pressure, just the sound of hooves and wind, and a slow unfolding of Iceland’s quieter side.

After the ride, we transitioned to a half-day Golden Circle loop: Gullfoss waterfall, a stop at a geothermal spring, and a final walk along the rocky edge of Lake Þingvellir. The views were classic — wild, wide, and beautiful. The ground though? Slippery. Volcanic rocks don’t play nice. Thankfully, my expandable backpack let me pack grip shoes, layers, and water without feeling overloaded.

Solo doesn’t mean alone. Sometimes it just means letting a horse like Nugget decide the pace for a while.
