Why Tenerife Feels Like a Cheat Code for Winter Travel

Some places aren’t meant to be kept secret forever.

Tenerife is one of them. While most of the UK is still under layers of wool and cloud in February, the Canary Islands quietly offer up 25°C sunshine, black sand beaches, and dramatic volcanic landscapes—with no long-haul flight necessary.

What makes Tenerife stand out isn’t just the warmth, but the contrast. Head south to find dry heat, coastal trails, and towns like Los Cristianos where swimsuits and sunglasses are year-round essentials. Up north? Garachico brings a different pace—natural rock pools, lush green hills, and cool Atlantic breezes. Teide stands in the middle, blocking weather like a mountain-sized curtain, giving each half of the island its own mood.
We spent most of the week switching between both. Hiking one day, café-hopping the next. It’s the kind of trip that feels like you’re doing a lot, even when you're mostly just enjoying the light.

When you’re walking all day, the gear you bring matters more. A waterproof backpack that doesn’t feel like one—light, low-profile, and expandable—is the kind of thing you forget you’re wearing until it rains. The one I brought (the 8808 Extend) fit a water bottle, an extra layer, camera, snacks, and still had room to spare.
